Governor Signs Senator Corman's Health Care Measure
Bill extending insurance benefits for young adults approved by
House, Senate
The Governor signed into law legislation introduced by Senator Jake Corman
(R-34) to extend health care coverage for young adults under their parents'
insurance plans.
Senate Bill 189 will extend health insurance coverage, at the expense of
policyholders, to adult dependent children up to the age of 30 who are not
married, have no dependents, are residents of the Commonwealth or enrolled as a
full-time student at an institution of higher education and are not provided
insurance coverage or eligible for government benefits. Insurers would be able
to determine increases in the premiums to cover this additional benefit.
"Today is a great day for Pennsylvania families. Enactment of Senate Bill 189
provides a significant expansion of the health care options for Pennsylvania's
young adults," Senator Corman said. "Young adults age 18 through 34 represent a
significant portion of uninsured Pennsylvanians. Many of these young people are
employed in jobs that don't provide benefits or they are required to pay
extremely high premiums. This new law will provide those young people with an
innovative and fiscally responsible option to receive health care coverage at a
cost they and their families can afford."
Senator Corman's legislation is part of the Senate Republican HealthNET PA
package, a blueprint that expands access to health care and medicine to
uninsured and low-income working Pennsylvanians.
